Learning Danish in Trampoline House

Learning Danish in Trampoline House

Trampoline House offers free Danish classes for asylum seekers, refugees or other citizens who want to learn the Danish language and culture. Everyone is welcome.

Danish class has just started. One of the students says to the teacher in Danish: “Du har meget grimt hår” (“You have very ugly hair”).

The teacher asks a times before realising: “Oh, you are trying to say “gray” in Danish,” she says with a relieved smile on her face. “Yes, that is correct. I am blond.”

Sign language helps

The students who are learning Danish come from many different countries. This can sometimes be a challenge for the teachers, since there is no common language to teach in. Katrine, who has been a volunteer Danish teacher since November, says:

“It’s difficult in the sense that there is no common language that you can use to explain something in. Not everyone speaks English, but then we just have to use signs to communicate, and everyone helps each other.”

Everyone can join

There are two Danish classes in Trampoline House: one for beginners and one for intermediate. The two classes follow the same teaching plan and topics, and it’s important that everyone can join:

“We use photos to inspire conversation,” Katrine says. “That way, everyone can participate; we talk about the photos in Danish and even the students who don’t speak any Danish, can follow the conversations. That works very well”.
